Outreach activities

Geothermal experts meeting, 10th – 13th and 16th December 2024 at Silversand Hotel, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The meeting, organized by UDSM, included geothermal experts from the College of Engineering and Technology and the School of Mines and Geosciences. The purpose was to develop a draft of Policy Guidelines for Geothermal Resource Development in Tanzania. A draft guideline and policy statements have been proposed and are ready for presentation to other geothermal stakeholders and the ministry.

Presentation at the Clean Energy Conference Australia Africa, 8-9 August 2024, Nairobi, Kenya. A presentation on the topic “Utilization of Low-to-Medium Temperature Geothermal Resources for Cooling and Canning of French Beans” was given by James Mariaria, a PhD student at KE, Kenya.

Visit to Innargi, Denmark, 19th July, 2024. PhD students from KE, Kenya, UDSM, Tanzania, and researchers from KU and DTU visited the Innargi. An overview of the GeoAfrica project was presented and the activities/projects related to the geothermal energy utilization from Innargi were discussed.

Presentation for a Nigerian delegation in connection with an Energy Diplomacy Exchange arranged through the European Commission (Directorate-General Energy) at DTU, 26th June 2024. A presentation about the project was given to the delegation.

Visit to Alfa Laval Heat Exchanger Manufacturing Facility, Lund, Sweden, 12th June, 2024. PhD students from KE, Kenya, UDSM, Tanzania, and researchers from KU and DTU visited the Alfa Laval Heat Exchanger Manufacturing Facility. An overview of the GeoAfrica project was presented and specifications related to the heat exchangers to be used in the demonstration plant were discussed. The PhD students benefited by learning the complete manufacturing process steps for different kinds of heat exchangers.

Visit to Njoro Canning Factory, Kenya 11th – 14th June, 2024. A PhD student and a faculty member from KE, Kenya visited the industrial facility. An overview of the GeoAfrica project was presented and data related to the heating oven was collected. Possible options for converting fossil fuel-based baking ovens to geothermal energy-powered baking ovens were discussed.

Presentation at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, May 2024. A presentation of the geothermal activities in Kenya and Tanzania, and the GeoAfrica project was given by the two PhD students from KE, Kenya and UDSM, Tanzania (related to the WP2).

‘(More) Women in Research’ workshop on March 5-8, 2024, at the MS-TCDC Training Center, Arusha, Tanzania organized by Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC) and MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation (MS-TCDC). This international event aimed to unite women researchers, offering networking opportunities, advice on navigating academia, and tools for advocacy. The workshop connected scholars from across Africa, facilitating the sharing of research, reflection, and discussions on contemporary global challenges. A PhD student from UDSM, Tanzania, represented the GeoAfrica project at the event.

Talks to College students and staff,  15th June 2023 and 24th August 2023 by Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DKUT), Kenya. DKUT conceived an outreach program and identified several universities and institutions of higher learning for the dissemination of information on geothermal energy. As a part of this outreach program, a talk was organized at the South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) (on 15th June, 2023) and Egerton University (on 24th August, 2023). Overall, 13 staff members and 170 students from the Departments of Engineering, Energy Studies, and Geology and Environment attended the talks from both these universities.

Short Course-I, 10th – 14th April 2023 2023 at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Kenya. The short course-I was focused on the introduction to geothermal energy resources and surface exploration (including a visit to KenGen’s Olkaria geothermal field and company’s facilities) and was offered to participants comprising of university students, early career researchers, and geothermal industry staff with little or no experience in geothermal operations. Preference was given to female applicants during the selection and their nomination was encouraged. The full costs of travel and accommodation were covered by the project. A total of 17 participants (10 female and 7 male) attended the course. The participants were from the Ministry of Energy (Geothermal Division), Kenya; KenGen, Kenya; Geothermal Association of Kenya, Kenya; University of Nairobi, Kenya; Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya; Kenyatta University, Kenya; Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Kenya and University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Folkeuniversitetet, Aarhus Universitet, Denmark, 2022-2024. Presentations about the project at courses, “Fremtidens Energi (tidl. Bæredygtigenergi)/Geotermisk Energi” and ”Vores Fantastiske Planet.”

Stakeholders Workshop. 25th - 26th May 2023. Silversands Hotel, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Organizer: USDM. Invited key geothermal stakeholders to discuss the development situation in East Africa and start developing and proposing policy guidelines and a roadmap for the geothermal resource utilization in Tanzania.

Geothermal excursion in Rungwe Volcanic Province (RVP) 7th 10th MAY 2023, in collaboration with Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC) and the School of Minerals and Geosciences (SoMG), University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), we managed to conduct a geothermal excursion in Rungwe Volcanic Province (RVP) – Mbeya and Songwe Regions. We had also a chance to interview some of the farmers near drilled shallow wells on their understanding of geothermal resources and how will it beneficial in their day-to-day activities.

Trip to Olkaria Geothermal Fields. UDSM, KE & KenGen members. 21st - 23rd Jan 2023. Nairobi and Naivasha (Olkaria and Oserian) Kenya. Reconnaissance and introductory meeting and Seminar. Seminar presentations on scope of research and requirements from KenGen.

Stakeholders Meetings and consultation, 19th – 21st  Dec 2022, at Tanzania Electric Company Limited (TANESCO), Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST), Ministry of Energy, Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), Vice President Office- Division of Environment (VPO-DE) located in Dodoma Region. UDSM GeoAfrica team visited five (5) potential stakeholders located in Dodoma Region and had meeting with individual stakeholders. The meetings were held specifically to introduce the GeoAfrica project to key stakeholders and collect preliminary data from stakeholders to help accomplishing the of policy guidelines and a roadmap for geothermal resource utilization in East Africa.
