Stakeholders workshop
A stakeholders workshop was held from 15–19 December 2025 at the EDEMA Conference Center in Morogoro, Tanzania, organized by the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). The event brought together key geothermal energy stakeholders from Tanzania along with partner institutions from Kenya. Participants included the Assistant Commissioner for Renewable Energy and a Geothermal Expert from the Ministry of Energy (Tanzania), representatives from the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC) and the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST), two representatives from Kenyatta University (Kenya), one online participant from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (Kenya), the Head of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at UDSM, members of the UDSM GeoAfrica project team, and two UDSM PhD students. The objective of the workshop was to provide a platform for these stakeholders and regional partners to review, deliberate, and finalize the proposed policy guidelines and roadmap for geothermal resource development and utilization in Tanzania.

Geothermal experts meeting
A geothermal experts meeting was held from 10–13 December and 16 December 2024 at the Silversand Hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The meeting, organized by the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), brought together geothermal specialists from the College of Engineering and Technology and the School of Mines and Geosciences.The purpose of the meeting was to develop a draft of the Policy Guidelines for Geothermal Resource Development in Tanzania. A draft guideline and corresponding policy statements were prepared and are now ready for presentation to broader geothermal stakeholders and the Ministry.
Presentation at the Clean Energy Conference Australia Africa
A presentation was delivered at the Clean Energy Conference Australia–Africa, held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 8–9 August 2024. The conference brought together experts and stakeholders from across both regions to discuss advancements in clean and sustainable energy technologies. During the event, James Mariaria, a PhD student at Kenyatta University, Kenya, presented his work titled “Utilization of Low-to-Medium Temperature Geothermal Resources for Cooling and Canning of French Beans.” His presentation highlighted the potential of geothermal energy to enhance sustainable agricultural processing, with particular emphasis on its application in post-harvest cooling and canning operations.
Visit to Innargi, Denmark
A visit to Innargi in Denmark was conducted on 19 July 2024. PhD students from Kenyatta University (KE), Kenya, and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania, together with researchers from the University of Copenhagen (KU) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), participated in the visit. During the engagement, an overview of the GeoAfrica project was presented, and Innargi’s activities and projects related to geothermal energy utilization were discussed.
Presentation for a Nigerian delegation
A presentation was delivered on 26 June 2024 at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in connection with an Energy Diplomacy Exchange arranged through the European Commission (Directorate‑General for Energy). The session brought together representatives from Nigeria and DTU to discuss developments in clean energy initiatives. An overview of the project was presented to the delegation, providing insights into its objectives and activities.
Visit to Alfa Laval Heat Exchanger Manufacturing Facility, Lund, Sweden
A visit to the Alfa Laval Heat Exchanger Manufacturing Facility in Lund, Sweden, was conducted on 12 June 2024. PhD students from Kenyatta University (KE), Kenya, and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania, together with researchers from the University of Copenhagen (KU) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), participated in the visit. An overview of the GeoAfrica project was presented, and specifications related to the heat exchangers to be used in the demonstration plant were discussed. The PhD students also benefited from learning about the complete manufacturing process for different types of heat exchangers, gaining valuable insights into industrial design and production practices.

Visit to Njoro Canning Factory, Kenya
A visit to the Njoro Canning Factory in Kenya was conducted from 11–14 June 2024. A PhD student and a faculty member from Kenyatta University (KE), Kenya, participated in the visit. During the engagement, an overview of the GeoAfrica project was presented, and data related to the heating oven was collected. Possible options for converting fossil fuel–based baking ovens to geothermal energy–powered systems were also discussed.
Presentation at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen
A presentation was delivered in May 2024 at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen. Two PhD students from Kenyatta University (KE), Kenya, and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania, presented the geothermal activities underway in Kenya and Tanzania, as well as an overview of the GeoAfrica project, in relation to Work Package 2 (WP2).
‘(More) Women in Research’ Workshop, Arusha, Tanzania
The ‘(More) Women in Research’ workshop was held from 5–8 March 2024 at the MS‑TCDC Training Center in Arusha, Tanzania. The event, organized by the Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC) and the MS-TCDC Training Centre, brought together women researchers from across Africa. This international workshop aimed to strengthen connections among women in academia by providing networking opportunities, guidance on navigating research careers, and tools for effective advocacy. Participants engaged in sharing research, reflecting on academic experiences, and discussing contemporary global challenges. A PhD student from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania, represented the GeoAfrica project at the event.
Outreach Talks at Kenyan Universities
Two outreach talks were delivered on 15 June 2023 and 24 August 2023 by Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DKUT), Kenya. As part of DKUT’s geothermal outreach program, several universities and institutions of higher learning were identified for the dissemination of information on geothermal energy. In this context, a talk was organized at South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) on 15 June 2023, followed by another at Egerton University on 24 August 2023. In total, 13 staff members and 170 students from the Departments of Engineering, Energy Studies, and Geology and Environment attended the sessions across the two institutions.

Outreach Talks at Kenyan Universities
Short Course I at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Kenya
Short Course‑I was held from 10–14 April 2023 at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DKUT), Kenya. The course focused on introducing geothermal energy resources and surface exploration techniques and included a field visit to KenGen’s Olkaria geothermal field and facilities. It was designed for university students, early‑career researchers, and geothermal industry staff with little or no prior experience in geothermal operations. Preference was given to female applicants during the selection process, and their nomination was actively encouraged. All travel and accommodation costs were fully covered by the project. A total of 17 participants (10 female and 7 male) attended the course. Participants represented a wide range of institutions, including the Ministry of Energy (Geothermal Division), Kenya; KenGen, Kenya; Geothermal Association of Kenya; University of Nairobi; Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology; Kenyatta University; Dedan Kimathi University of Technology; and the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Folkeuniversitetet Presentations at Aarhus University, Denmark
From 2022 to 2024, a series of presentations about the project were delivered through Folkeuniversitetet at Aarhus University, Denmark. These presentations formed part of two courses: “Fremtidens Energi (tidl. Bæredygtig Energi)/Geotermisk Energi” and “Vores Fantastiske Planet.”
Stakeholders Workshop
A stakeholders workshop was held from 25–26 May 2023 at the Silversands Hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, organized by the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). The objective of the workshop was to provide a platform for major geothermal stakeholders and GeoAfrica project partners to review the geothermal development landscape in Tanzania and the wider East African region, and to begin formulating proposed policy guidelines and a strategic roadmap for advancing geothermal resource utilization in the country. Participants included the Acting Assistant Commissioner for Renewable Energy from the Ministry of Energy (Tanzania); the Acting General Manager of the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC); the Dean of the School of Mines and Geosciences at UDSM; representatives from the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST); consultants from NIRAS; the Principal of the College of Engineering and Technology at UDSM; the Head of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at UDSM; and other members of the GeoAfrica project team. Several online participants also joined the workshop, including team members from DTU (Denmark); Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DKUT), Kenya; the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen; UNEP; Kenyatta University, Kenya; and Alfa Laval.

Geothermal Excursion in Rungwe Volcanic Province (RVP)
A geothermal excursion was conducted from 7–10 May 2023 in the Rungwe Volcanic Province (RVP), covering areas in the Mbeya and Songwe Regions. The activity was organized in collaboration with the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC) and the School of Mines and Geosciences (SoMG) at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). The excursion aimed to assess geothermal manifestations in the region and enhance understanding of the geological and geothermal potential of the RVP. During the visit, the team also engaged with farmers living near shallow geothermal wells to gather insights into their awareness of geothermal resources and explore potential opportunities for geothermal applications in their daily activities. These interactions offered valuable perspectives on community needs and possible local benefits of geothermal development.
Field Visit to the Olkaria Geothermal Fields, Kenya
A field trip to the Olkaria Geothermal Fields was conducted from 21–23 January 2023, involving participants from UDSM (Tanzania), Kenyatta University (KE, Kenya), and the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen). The purpose of the trip was to carry out reconnaissance activities, hold introductory meetings, and participate in a seminar hosted by KenGen. During the seminar, presentations were given on the research scope and on the technical requirements necessary for collaboration with KenGen.
Stakeholder Meetings and Consultations in Dodoma, Tanzania
Stakeholder consultation meetings were held from 19–21 December 2022 with five key institutions located in the Dodoma Region: Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST), the Ministry of Energy, the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), and the Vice President’s Office – Division of Environment (VPO‑DE). The UDSM GeoAfrica team met each institution individually to introduce the GeoAfrica project and engage stakeholders in its early development stages. The meetings aimed to gather preliminary data and stakeholder input to support the formulation of policy guidelines and a roadmap for geothermal resource utilization in East Africa. These consultations established strong foundational collaboration with national authorities and regulatory bodies essential for guiding geothermal development in Tanzania.
Project Registration in Tanzania
The GeoAfrica project was officially registered in the Research Information Management System (RIMS) at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania, on 6 December 2022. The project received the registration number CoET‑MIE22196, marking its formal recognition and enabling institutional support, administrative processing, and documentation within UDSM’s research framework.
